The Co-operative Group head office, completed in 2013, is close to the area north of Manchester city centre called Angel Meadows, described by Friedrich Engels in his 1845 book “The Condition of the Working Class in England” as “hell on earth”. It replaces the complex of buildings around Balloon Street, Corporation Street, Dantzic Street, Hanover Street, and Miller Street (where I worked twenty years ago). In this photograph it’s viewed from Miller Street.
